Red Lentils DAL

Red lentils dal is definitely one of my favorite Indian food. It’s so tasty, so fragrant, and so easy to make. This healthy recipe is so rich in spices and so aromatic, a perfect dish during cold and rainy days.

  • Easy

  • 45 minutes

  • 2-3 people servings

  • For any occasion

  • 250 gr red lentils
  • 750 ml water (to cook the lentils)
  • 3 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 cm of fresh ginger (minced)
  • 1 golden onion (cut in small diced)
  • 1 green chili (seeded and cut in small diced)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika powder
  • 2 pcs cardamom seeds
  • 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • 3 curry leaves
  • 100 gr grape tomatoes (cut in small diced)
  • Parsley to garnish
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Parsley or coriander leaves to garnish
  • Wash the lentils, then boil them in a covered pan for 20 – 30 minutes. Drain the lentils once they’re cooked and leave them aside.
  • Heat the oil in a pan then add the cinnamon, cardamom, and curry leaves, stir it for a few minutes until fragrant. Then add garlic, ginger, green chili, and onion. Cook them for a few minutes until the onion turns golden and fragrant.
  • Add the rest of the spices (curry, turmeric, and paprika powder) into the pan then mix well.
  • Put in the tomatoes, stir well with the rest of the ingredients, cover the pan, turn down the heat, and cook for about 10 – 15 minutes until the tomatoes become soft. Stir it occasionally to avoid sticking.
  • Add the cooked lentils into the pan and mix well with all the spices and garnish
  • Serve hot with whole basmati rice.
